Southwood Presbyterian Church’s sanctuary was designed for spoken word, choir performance, and a pipe organ with natural reverberation in mind.
The EAW ADAPTive system was specifically chosen for the ability to keep sound energy off the vaulted ceilings while maintaining a high trim height. By adjusting the vertical coverage, the ANNA array was able to hang high enough to avoid blocking the stain glass window.
The first challenge faced was the large stained glass window high above center stage. To avoid blocking the window, the live audio system needed to have a high trim height. It was also crucial that the acoustic energy be kept away from the vaulted wood ceiling. Anna solved both sight line and acoustic concerns. With Anna’s ability to adjust the vertical coverage, cabinets could be hung high enough to avoid blocking the stain glass window while still covering every seat.
The second challenge was the weight restrictions of the wooden beams in the sanctuary. Verta worked closely with Fuqua, an engineering firm specializing in wooden beam design, and the beams’ manufacturer to engineer an accurate loading capacity. Nevertheless, the Anna cabinets, which require fewer boxes than a traditional line-array, made the overall hang lighter and easier to manage.
